Course overview

Global change and the environment have become ever-present concerns in the world. For those students wanting to contribute to more sustainable earth, the environmental science/environmental studies program offers an interdisciplinary approach to examining environmental issues. The program guides students in understanding the implications of global climate change, the development of sustainable energy strategies, the challenges of maintaining biodiversity, the handling and disposal of hazardous materials, and managing risks associated with large-scale natural phenomena such as earthquakes, floods, and fires. The program offers two tracks—environmental science and environmental studies. Both tracks take an interdisciplinary approach, combining natural science with sociological, ethical, political, and historical approaches to environmental analysis. Whittier offers students a curriculum based on a balance between the in-depth knowledge needed to tackle difficult environmental problems and the breadth necessary to view those problems from multiple perspectives.
