Medical esthetics is a specialized field of study for skincare which focuses on advanced, clinical-grade cosmetic treatments that improve the appearance and health of the skin. It combines beauty and medicine, often involving non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures and treatments performed in a medical or clinical setting and may be under the supervision of a licensed health-care professional. The Medical Esthetics graduate certificate program is tailored for working professionals. Designed for advanced learners with a background in skincare esthetics, medical clinics or related fields, this program will equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills over two semesters, featuring ten courses and two field experience opportunities in the Humber Spa. The program is offered in a hybrid-twilight delivery format (in-person, online synchronous and hybrid courses generally scheduled after 3 p.m.) and practical learning approach. It balances foundational knowledge; advanced techniques; and an understanding of the ethical, legal, and business aspects of medical esthetics. The curriculum, developed with insights from industry partners and the program advisory committee, addresses the industry's need for trained professionals with a thorough understanding of advanced skincare, client concerns and effective treatment methods. Skills acquired through this program include skin rejuvenation and treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and microneedling; and laser and light therapies such as laser hair reduction and tattoo removal. Skills will also include treatments for pigmentation and vascular lesions. In addition, students will gain experience and knowledge in medical grade skincare products to address specific skincare concerns.
