Southern English College’s primary goal for General English students is to prepare them to communicate successfully in English outside the classroom. The 72-week General English course (6 levels x 12 weeks) is designed to develop autonomous learning through student-centered activities focusing on task-based learning and communicative competence. It effectively integrates the four macro-skills, which optimizes the possibility of a student reaching their learning potential. By the end of the course, students will be able to use their English more confidently and with greater fluency. The main delivery mode is face-to-face. However, online materials and homework will provide students the opportunity to study outside the classroom in their own time. The Advanced level is a 12-week, 20 hours per week, typically 5 hours per day level (Monday to Thursday). The core part of the level is the first three hours, when students will use the set textbook, along with supplementary material. Students will study all of the skill areas: reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. As this period is the core part of the student’s learning, the most important aim for the instructor is to create a positive, supportive and comfortable classroom environment, based on good rapport and empathetic communication with the students. The last hour of the shift will focus on a specific skill area: Essay Writing, Debating, Presenting, and Advanced grammar practice. These practical classes are designed to add to the students’ learning experience by covering material that complements what is included in the core classes.
