Course overview

The graduate degrees in petroleum engineering focuses heavily on research and hands-on opportunities, including presentations and field trips. These experiences will advance your petroleum engineering career. Attend the International Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) Knowledge Centre Summer School activities, including training for an entire week by CCS experts from around the world. Find yourself at a Mitacs intern project presentation competition. U of R’s petroleum systems engineering is one of the main research providers to the world's largest Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage project. We collaborate closely with the Petroleum Technology Research Centre — as well as other research centres — locally and around the world. Easily make connections with these bodies as you decide what to study and research. Use equipment such as:

- -High temperature high pressure DBR PVT cell;

- -Axisymmetirc drop shape analysis apparatus/Spinning drop interfacial tension apparatus

- -Rising-bubble apparatus (commercial scale)

- -Combustion tube

- -Kinetic reactor

- -Large scale 3D sandpack

- -High speed Beckman Coulter Centrifuge Avanti J30I

- -Commercial scale live oil recombination cell

- -Gas chromatography/HPLC/FTIR/UV-VIS

- -Sandpack and core flooding apparatus

- -High resolution microscopy

- -Micromodel etching system

-

Gain engineering project management and problem-solving skills in courses like advanced enhanced oil recovery, which covers the study of displacement of fluids within a reservoir, chemical flooding and steam assisted gravity drainage. Receive invaluable background knowledge in advanced gas reservoir engineering, where you'll explore advanced treatment of water influx in gas reservoirs Other cutting-edge petroleum systems engineering courses include:

- -Surface thermodynamics

- -Petroleum geomechanics

- -Fluid flow in porous media
