History majors analyze and investigate the world around them. In University of West Florida's history program, students will explore their own and others’ cultural identities. Students will conduct independent research, contribute to the body of historical knowledge, evaluate popular claims of “historical fact” and identify social patterns. Graduate prepared to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly connected world. In the complex world, the tools of historians help us understand where we are as a society. Students will learn to think critically, communicate effectively and ask informed questions. These skills are highly sought after by employers, making them well positioned to enter the workforce. The devoted faculty will help students design a program to satisfy their needs and interests. Students will be challenged to investigate the world around them and consider why things are the way they are. Students will explore ideas of cultural identity, the origins of modern institutions and traditions, and the worldview of past and present cultures around the globe. Core history courses will teach students research skills, the ability to find and evaluate sources of information, and the means to identify and analyze diverse interpretations. Students will study societies and events from decades, centuries and millennia in the past, and figure out what we can learn from them. Students can focus on American, Latin American or European history, as well as a variety of other topics. Students can take elective courses in literature, communication arts, political science, anthropology, psychology plus other areas. If students are preparing for a career in business, they can choose courses in management, marketing, computer science and finance. University of West Florida offers numerous opportunities to work with faculty on research projects as well as participate in a variety of internships or other high-impact practices. University of West Florida has several scholarships available to undergraduates.
