Understanding and managing maritime resources is becoming increasingly important, requiring a wide range of knowledge and practical skills. Of the small number of maritime studies programs in the U.S., none are as diverse and widely appealing as University of West Florida's. This program combines focus and flexibility, letting students customize a degree. Students can choose between multiple hands-on experiences, including internships, practicums or overseas field studies. Or students can choose to complete a structured field experience utilizing professional field methods. Throughout studies, students will gain the knowledge they need to participate in—and contribute to—the growing understanding and management of maritime environments. This interdisciplinary program integrates five primary fields of study: anthropology and archaeology, environmental studies, history, government and biology. Students will supplement their studies with elective courses from a wide range of disciplines, such as art history, literature, law, political science and leisure. As a maritime studies major, students will have opportunities for professional development with University of West Florida's Archaeology Institute, the Florida Public Archaeology Network and Marine Services Center.
