Course overview

This three-year single honours degree immerses you in the societies, politics, ideas and sources of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. You’ll study major historical developments and themes such as empire, culture, philosophy, warfare and gender in the classical world. The course also gives you the opportunity to learn a classical language (Greek or Latin) in your first year, and to engage with source material (written and material) and small-group seminars in later years. The course offers the opportunity to study classical languages such as Greek or Latin, helping to deepen understanding of original sources. Teaching combines lectures, seminars, and small-group discussions led by research-active staff. As students progress, they can choose from specialist modules that reflect different aspects of ancient civilisation, culminating in a research-based dissertation. Based at the Streatham Campus in Exeter, the programme develops analytical thinking, communication, and research skills, preparing graduates for diverse careers in heritage, education, law, media, and business, or for further academic study.
