Course overview

This three-year undergraduate degree (with options for a four-year variant including study abroad or employment experience) combines practical training in theatre and performance with critical, cultural, and historical study of film and television. Students develop acting, directing, writing and co-creation skills in performance modules while also analysing film and television as social, industrial and global media forms. The curriculum blends studio-based teaching (in small groups) with seminars, screenings and critical writing; early years focus on core modules such as Performance Analysis and Major Debates in Film Theory, while later years allow you to choose specialised options (for example: Acting for Screen, Television: Times, Trends and Technologies, Cinema in the Anthropocene) and undertake a major dissertation. Located at the Streatham Campus in Exeter, the programme gives you hands-on access to theatre- and media-specific facilities (studios, sound & video suites, the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum) and emphasises transferable skills such as communication, creativity, teamwork and critical thinking — preparing you for careers in performance, production, media analysis, cultural industries or further study.
