Course overview

Explore some of today’s hottest social issues as an AUM Sociology major. Examine such topics as the causes of social inequality, the social factors that influence human behavior and the diversity of cultural practices. You’ll be trained to think critically, conduct rigorous research, and understand different points of view, skills valued by today’s employers.  A degree in Sociology will equip you for a range of jobs including social work, demography, law, government, community activism, and industrial relations. You’ll be able to choose a concentration in Anthropology, General Sociology, Marriage and Family, or Pre-Social Work. AUM students regularly participate in the annual meetings of the Alabama-Mississippi Sociological Association, frequently taking top honors in the Undergraduate Paper Competition. Students have the opportunity for internships in local social service agencies such as Child Protect, Aid to Inmate Mothers, Comfort Care Hospice, and Common Ground.
