Courses in sociology emphasize the principles of social organization and conflict; a comparative analysis of societies and social institutions; the role of culture in shaping human behavior; and principles of social interaction. Students develop a fundamental understanding of sociological theories and research methods, as well as breadth in substantive areas of the discipline. At Wilson, the sociology major pays particular attention to social inequalities and the myriad ways that social life is structured by social class, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality. Students are required to complete an internship and an advanced seminar that strengthen their ability to understand and analyze social life.
