Designing mechanical engineering systems to meet society’s grand challenges requires technical and creative skills. Industrially-relevant and practical skills are at the heart of this course, which is designed to train you to become a professional mechanical engineer who can create solutions that are safe, efficient and sustainable. Engineering is about interpersonal skills as well as technical expertise, and on this course they will learn through doing. Students will spend the majority of their time on group and individual projects, developing your communication, collaboration, creative and critical thinking skills – equipping students well for the demands of an applied job in industry This course focuses on real-world challenges and practical project work, which reflects the type of work students will progress on to as a professional mechanical engineer. Alongside studying taught modules, they will spend eight months on a group project and three months on an individual project, both of which are aimed at solving real-life industrial problems. students will get the chance to build your expertise in topics such as advanced stress analysis, advanced manufacturing, structural integrity and finite element analysis, sustainable materials, renewable energy, environmental aerodynamics and spacecraft structures. They will also develop your digital skills, learning how to use the latest industry-standard design and solid mechanic modelling software, and analysing data using machine learning models and presenting their findings.
