Students can set their career in the dairy industry in motion with Lakeland’s new animal science technology major. Through this dairy science major students will learn specialized dairy management skills. Students will learn hands-on and through student-managed activities. Those activities range from practical herd management to implementing new technologies. The Dairy Learning Centre will be central to many of students' learning experiences. They will investigate current industry events and trends. In their second year, students will be members of the Student-Managed Farm (SMF) dairy unit. Or, they will do a student-led practicum. Whatever their choice, students will understand multiple aspects of how to manage a dairy farm. The range goes from herd health to supervising employees to business financials. Students will graduate armed with knowledge and tools to return to the farm or to make their mark in another area of the dairy sector. Once graduated from this program, students may apply to one of the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology streams. This diploma can be used to complete the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology degree in two years instead of four.
